What this site is#
VoxelRank is a server list. Server owners add their server, players vote for the ones they like, and the ranking is simply who got the most votes this calendar month. Votes reset on the 1st, so a server that stops earning them slides down · the list reflects what people are playing now, not what was popular three years ago.
Everything a visitor needs is free: listing a server costs nothing, voting costs nothing, and the API and vote banners are open to every listing.
How the ranking works#
The ranking is measured in points, and a point is not quite a vote. Every listing chooses how often its players may vote for it, and a server that asks four times a day earns less for each of those votes than a server that asks once. The arithmetic is published here rather than described, because an owner who cannot see why a competitor is above them will assume it was bought, and it cannot be.
A vote on a 24-hour listing is one full point, and that is the reference every other setting is measured against. A vote is worth 1 / √(votes per day) of a full vote:
| Cooldown the owner chose | Votes a day | Each vote is worth | Points a day, full turnout |
|---|---|---|---|
| 24h | 1 | 100% | 100% |
| 12h | 2 | 71% | 142% |
| 8h | 3 | 58% | 174% |
| 6h | 4 | 50% | 200% |
So asking for four times as many votes earns twice the points, never four times. 24 hours is the default and also the longest we allow; 6 hours is the floor, and no listing may ask more often than that. The percentages are exact, not rounded for display: points are held internally as whole hundredths, which is the same number the table prints, and the visible counter is rounded down. A month of votes cannot drift.
A site-wide event multiplier, when one is running, multiplies the result. It applies to every listing equally, an admin is the only one who can start one, and it is capped, so the most any single vote can ever be worth is the event multiplier itself. Server owners cannot set a multiplier on their own listing.
- The score is points earned in the current month. Nothing else moves a server up.
- Every listing shows both numbers, points and the real vote count behind them, so the weighting is never hidden inside a single figure.
- Paid tiers apply no boost at all. Money buys placement and styling; the order of the ranking is decided by votes alone.
- Sponsored cards on the homepage and auction slots are placements, not votes · they sit outside the ranking and are labelled.
- Owners can bump a listing to break ties in their favour, on a cooldown.
- Player counts come from pinging the server directly, every few minutes. Uptime is the share of pings answered.
We would rather have a ranking people trust than a ranking that maximises revenue, which is why the boosts are capped and printed on the pricing page.
Keeping votes honest#
Every vote passes a maths captcha, a honeypot field, a per-IP rate limit and a cooldown on that server, which the owner sets between 6 and 24 hours and which is shown on the vote page before you vote. Suspicious patterns get removed in bulk. If you spot a server buying or botting votes, report it · the Report button is on every server page, and reports go to a human.
How we pay for it#
Three things, all of them visible: advertising (Google AdSense, contextual only, labelled), optional premium listings, and sponsor slots auctioned weekly for specific placements · the homepage strip, a game or category page, the similar-servers rail.
What none of them buy is rank. The ranking is points earned this month and nothing else: there is no paid boost and no thumb on the scale. Votes are weighted, but only by the published formula above, which every listing is measured by identically and which no amount of money changes. A sponsored server sitting at the top of the page is still ranked wherever its votes put it, and it is labelled as sponsored. We also do not sell user data, and advertisers receive nothing about you beyond the page you are looking at. Payments run through Tebex.
